VINTAGE SURFBOARD

"the inspiration for building this old style board came from a picture of my father holding his Tom blake designed board taken about 1938 at Long Beach, California. My Dad built that board and helped me build my first board in 1955. His ability to try any project and succeed still encourages me today in the water and in my shop."

This is an authentically designed replica of a 1930's vintage, Tom Blake hollow-body surfboard. Tom Blake is known as the father of the modern" surfboard. In 1926 he introduced the first shift from solid plank boards to a lighter weight, more maneuverable board.

This board was originally made to meet the criteria of the Hawai'i Forest Industry Woods of Hawai'i Show. It is made from three Hawaiian-grown woods : the deck and bottom are matched 3/8" thick planks of Koa and mango; the rails and interior frame are toona (Austaralian red cedar). A mock-up of the interior is available to see how the board is made.

Mahalo to local long time surfer Harris Warren for his help and fascinating stories in researching the board's design and history. MacKinnon Simpson and Stan Melman of the Maritime Museum also contributed time and expertise; thank you to both of them.
