HAWAIIAN PETROGLYPHS

Na Ki'i Pohaku (Hawaiian Petroglyphs) is an early Hawaiian art expression carved in rock. Because of the nature of ancient Hawaiian life, it is difficult to interpert these petroglyphs. They can be legends, myths, art expression or everyday life in general. Petroglyphs are still visible today on various parts of the islands. The Rainbowman on Oahu, the Surfer, Paddler and Dancer on Hawaii.

The choice of sandstone instead of lava rock (of which most Petroglyphs are on), came about because of the ancient Hawaiian legend that you will receive bad luck with the removal of any lava rock. Many people have experienced problems until they replace the rock back where it belonged. Due to superstition, lava rock couldn't be used, but the idea of Hawaiian Petroglyphs etched in rock would be wonderful to have, so we have decided to try them in sandstone like the southwest American Indian, Hieroglyphs.
